Red Hot Jazz Heats Up North Park Art Gallery

The Studio Door Celebrates The Sound and The Sights of Today’s Jazz

SAN DIEGO, California — The American art form of Jazz is showcased in a national art exhibition running from September 1 - 26, 2015 at The Studio Door in North Park. This visual arts showcase, deliberate distortions: jazz in today’s art opens with an artists reception on Friday, September 4th at 6 PM and a musical evening with Stage 4 on Saturday, September 5th at 7 PM during North Park 30 Block Art Night.

As an American art form, jazz has always found its power in spontaneity, personal experience and collaboration. Transforming over the course of a century, the sound is heard in a wide variety of styles, sometimes within the same performance. Artists from Piet Mondrian to Jackson Pollock found inspiration in the heart of jazz. deliberate distortions asked artists what jazz looks like in today’s art.

“Roll it out hot or cold, I love the sound of Jazz!,” said The Studio Door owner Patric Stillman, “Marry the sound to visual arts and the result is burning. I’ve, personally, been waiting for this exhibition all year. That’s a lot to say considering it follows on the heels of our successful showcases The Crow Show, 50 To Watch and Once Upon a Time.”

Thirty-three artists, ten of which are local to San Diego, have been juried into the show by Melissa Inez Walker of Distinction Gallery and ArtHatch in Escondido. Participating artists include Trygve Amundsen, Nancy Bardach, Brandin Baron, Ally Benbrook, Sheryl Daniels, Michael Davies, Sandy Friedman, Susan Gesell, Jessica Gray, Chris Kelsey, D.C. Langer, Cecelia Linayao, Crisinda, Carol Mansfield, Michael McDonald, Kathleen McLaughlin, Janet Muller, Jane Notides Benzing, Jane O’Shields-Hayner, Louis Ocepek, Bonnie Owens, Steven Paulsen, Marie-Pierre Philippe-Lohezic, Joan Rosenberg-Dent, Bonnie Roth, Jane Runyeon, Carol Seibold, Jesse Seibold, Jenny Singleton, Ewa Taryma-Myslinski, Rachel Weissberger, Deborah Williams and Richard Wynne.

deliberate distortions: jazz in today’s art runs from September 1 - 26, 2015. An opening reception at the North Park gallery will be held on September 4th at 3750 30th Street in North Park, San Diego from 6 PM to 9 PM. Live music in the gallery will happen during North Park 30 Block Art Night on September 5th from 7 PM - 10 PM. Both events are free to the public. All artwork is available for sale throughout the month at The Studio Door. The show will continue with regular hours Tuesday through Sunday with extended hours during July’s Ray at Night on September 12th. Check the website at thestudiodoor.com for more details.
