Our Story

The Studio Door began as a dream sparked by artist and gallerist Patric Stillman’s personal journey of rediscovery, creativity, and community. In 2014, Patric brought his vision to life with the opening of The Studio Door—an art gallery and working studio designed to foster both the professional and creative growth of artists, while cultivating a sense of belonging for all.

What started as a gallery quickly evolved into a vibrant hub for artistic expression. The Studio Door became a safe, inclusive space where creativity is nurtured, with a strong emphasis on diversity and accessibility. It has since provided mid-career and professional artists—particularly in the LGBTQ+ community—with the resources, mentorship, and visibility needed to thrive.

Key milestones, such as the annual THE CROW SHOW exhibition and collaborations with prominent art organizations, have further solidified The Studio Door’s place in the San Diego arts scene. But The Studio Door’s impact goes far beyond exhibitions. As an artist-run business, it challenges the “starving artist” stereotype, demonstrating that artists can thrive both creatively and financially through sustainable career pathways.

Through community-driven projects and strategic partnerships, The Studio Door has become a cornerstone of the San Diego arts community. It’s more than just an art space—it’s a catalyst for change, empowering artists while also offering patrons and businesses opportunities to engage with art in meaningful ways.

Recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Artie Award and the Larry T. Baza Arts & Culture Award, The Studio Door continues to be a vital force in the local, LGBTQ+, and artistic communities. As it enters its next chapter, The Studio Door remains committed to empowering artists and fostering collaboration in a thriving creative environment.
