WORDS OF PRIDE
Now in its 8th year, PROUD+ returns with greater ambition, broader visibility, and a refined artistic lens. The exhibition continues to affirm The Studio Door’s position as San Diego’s leading gallery for contemporary LGBTQIA+ art.
This year’s national exhibition was juried in collaboration with Jonathan Carver Moore, the pioneering gallerist making waves from San Francisco’s Tenderloin to the global art stage. His curation of queer POC artists bring powerful new voices and extraordinary artists into the spotlight.
Adding visual depth, fashion photographer Max-Arthur Mantle presents selected works from his internationally exhibited Bodies Series, capturing Black and Brown men in striking, unflinching beauty.
The exhibition also unveils expansive local artworks.
• Carole Kuck’s BOLD AND BRILLIANT: The Colors of LGBTQIA+ Pride is an immersive installation that integrates the color identities of 50 LGBTQIA+ flags representing various sexual orientations and gender identities, exhibited together for the first and only time. Patrons are already buzzing about getting a piece of what it going to go down locally as a historic work of art.
• Words of Pride, created in collaboration with San Diego Mayor’s GLBTQ Historic Task Force honoring Hillcrest’s recent designation as the official LGBTQ Cultural District, will bring together the work of 30 local LGBTQ+ artists within a 8’ x 12’ triptych. Expect to see this move around the County in the coming year.
The Studio Door would like to thank the following financial patrons for their support of the initial creation of Words of Pride: Bob Benzel, Chad Berwald, Nik Boivin, Melanie Brewer, Jeff Caffarel, Jennifer Otenti, Big Mike Phillips, RD Riccoboni, Gerry Sullivan, It’s in the Details and In The Memory of Arnold Gum.
